RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, located using intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of access tunnels down to the site... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as ISIS - imposed militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among thousands of British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces conducted what it called a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
